Online Site’s Annoying Discrepancies

Reality bites. When you build a site, you worry about many things – content, layout, colors, screen resolutions and other elements. Not only that, you also worry about the potential discrepancies and trouble.

I have read the article of Eric Giguere, an AdSense publisher. Said entry was entitled How to prevent ads from printing. It tackles about the author’s desire to always get the right balance between placing ads to advertise but not to engender the reading by the viewers.

Another problem concerning sites is the printability of the page. Say, printing ads in the whole page of the site is not only absurd but futile.

These are also the concerns of lots of e-commerce web development sites. In fact they want to prevent these discrepancies to bolster growth in traffic and ranking.

In the article, Giguere divulged his secret to prevent said printing. Using CSS, the web developer can specify which of the pages can be used when printing and which pages can not. This is done by incorporating the media property to the link tag. The CSS class in called ‘noprint’.

When the screen transforms into a noprint class, printing is precluded. Simple remedy to a complex discrepancy in web development.

Animation: The Next Level

With the discovery of simple new animated PNG format by two young turks, a new fascinating world has opened.

In a blog entry entitled MNG is dead, long live APNG, the author said:

“I am partly responsible for the PNG image format. I got the ball rolling, played benevolent dictator and edited the first nine drafts. PNG is moderately successful, but it never did replace GIF. That's mainly because Netscape sprang animated GIF on the world when the PNG specification was nearly final, without saying a word or once suggesting that we include animation.

When animated GIF appeared, I lobbied the PNG group for simple, GIF-style animation support in PNG, which would have given the world a lossless true-color animation format with an alpha channel... even if it wasn't any more sophisticated than GIF from an animation point of view. I lost out to those who made eloquent arguments for a more complete animation format.1 MNG, the all-singing, all-dancing, all-merciless animation format, took a long time to standardize and was rejected by both major web browser vendors, who perceived it as too complex and requiring too much code to implement.

I could not be more pleased with this development.”

With discoveries like this one, web development is getting more and more exciting each day.

What spells simple and interactive web design?

I remembered web the web designer’s food for thought – KISS. It means Keep It Simple Stupid!

Every web design must be simple so as not to overshadow the content. Flashy and neon colored sites are eyesores. They tend to discourage reading.

Simplicity need not be too plain and bring. In fact, making the site interesting and appealing is one of the most important concerns in web site development services.

Further, it must also be interactive to encourage participation from the viewers. That way, traffic will enormously increase.

In a blog entitled Simple and Interactive Web Design, the author expressed his beliefs…

“I believe that web design should be kept simple, communicating clearly with customers and other web site visitors. Visitors should be able to easily navigate the web site in order to find what they are looking for. For smaller web sites, everything should be no more than a few clicks away from the home page.

I also believe that web sites become much more useful when they are interactive. Interactive web sites engage the site visitor to contribution information, questions, or comments. An integrated discussion forum can be an effective way to make a web page a true communications tool.

While I believe that easy-of-use is the most important factor in web design, I also consider search engine rankings when creating the structural elements of a web site. I design web sites that are both user- and search engine-friendly.”

Truly, to perfect the craft does not only need skill and artistic talent but passion and patience as well.

What’s the big deal about web pages?

Having a catchy and engrossing web page is a big deal. This is because of the demanding nature of e-commerce services. Visitors stay and are loyal to a site that can give them all that they ask for – all that they need. As the owner of a web site, you have this responsibility to make your site updated, functional and ‘delicious’ to your probable visitors. Thus, you have to avoid the clichés and taboos and create the best web page you can have.

The flow of e-commerce services is getting faster and tougher. This will surely keep you thinking – what seems to be missing in my web page?

To keep you well abreast, here are some of the must have:

1. Good Layout and Design. Do not overuse images. Do not bore your visitors by plain texts. Layout and design must be catchy. Fonts must be readable, colors pleasant to the eyes and images attractive. Organization and function with a brush of art can make the visitors stay longer and satisfied.

2. Perfect Content. It must be interesting and engrossing. Something that is not tedious to read and understand. Content must also be original. Otherwise, you are exposing yourself to the intellectual property violation which is plagiarism. Another, be sure that the content is free from grammatical errors and incorrect spelling. Read, proofread and edit.

3. An air of your Personality. Your web page should share a part of your self - part of your personality. The moment a visitor enters your site, he must be able to grasp a bit of who you are or what kind of company or business you have. You can give biographical information, company information and all sorts that can further give your background and outlook.

4. Dive into its Depth. Web pages must not be superficial. It must have something beneath its facade. A good web page is worthy of exploration. Nonetheless, you need not make numerous pages. Try using hyperlinks and hot lists.

Content is the KING

In today’s modern times, writing grows with time. At the onset of website development, writing expanded and created different forms and styles. Standard writing gave birth to web writing.

If you want to your content to be a sure hit, you have to have these web writing essentials:

1. Readability. Patience – that’s what most of the visitors do not have. Thus, you have to immediately give them the information they wanted. Be sure that your font size and color will contribute to its readability.

2. Scanability. Scanning is another great probability because online readers tend to scan. To make it easier for them, use bullets, numbering and letters to produce an outlined look. Use frequent paragraph breaks to make the eyes rest at every break. Subtopics can also be had for summarization of ideas.

3. Relevance. Your content must be relevant to your site’s purpose. Otherwise it should not be placed there. To know whether it is relevant, ask yourself if it is related to the topic or site. Is it important to your cause? If it is then, never forget to include it.

4. Error-free. Mechanical and factual errors can be disastrous. They can spoil the visitor’s reading experience or worse, ruin the site’s credibility. Moreover, you have to read, proofread, edit and edit some more.

5. Harmony with the web design. The content and the web design must be in harmony with each other. The responsibility lies on both the designer and the writer. They must work closely together to achieve this end.

6. Consistency. The tone, terms and style must be regular throughout the pages. Inconsistencies baffle and upset the readers.

7. Personality. Every home page must be distinct from all other. It must exude personality which gives them the chance of knowing you or your company.

FORM is the QUEEN

Web designing is the next big step in pursuing e-commerce web development. Moreover, you have to make a good choice because the success of your marketing depends on it.

Here are the essential qualities of web designing:

Interactivity

This quality allows the reader to participate actively and willingly. Examples of interactive device are the following: tests, hypermedia, hypertext, games, chat rooms and the likes.

Linear Organization

Functionality does not equate to boredom. Thus, do not make your web page more boring than a book and difficult to read like a technical thesis. You have to make it catchy, engrossing and illuminating.

Concentration on Details

There must be consistency as to details. On the educational aspect, cognitive loading, sequencing of information, feedback and erroneous text must be avoided since they represent bad design.

On the technical aspect, broken links, poor navigation and inactive pointers are annoying. Thus, if you want to incorporate the same into your design, be sure they are functioning well so as not to infuriate the visitors.

Graphic User Interface

Quality is your topmost priority. Hence, graphic user interface must not be overlooked. To give you a hint, do not use dull colors, avoid busy screens and the overuse of animations and graphics.

E-commerce web development is crucial to your web page. Be sure to apply them effectively and rightfully.

Legal Web-based Search Tool

It’s nice to know that the web is growing better and better to make the globe shrink into a village. Website development must cope up with this growth in order to give updated information and data.

A while ago, I have come across a nice blog entry entitled Is There Another Web-based Search Tool for Digests of Court Cases Involving Electronic Evidence?. It is an entry which tackles about making jurisprudence available and accessible to all.

Part of the entry states:

I mentioned the Sensei electronic evidence case search tool yesterday and then saw that the Preston Gates Electronic Discovery Case Database now contains more than 400 cases. The good news is that you now have two free search tools for electronic discovery cases.

Now, it will be easier for us to pore over digested cases. By that, we learn to be cautious and knowledgeable of the jurisprudence and the recent additions to the laws of the land.

Paying Emails?!

How do you go about the idea of paying for every email that you are sending? For me this rumor is pretty awful. It’s sick and foolish.

Early this morning, I happened to read a blog entitled Plan to charge for email won't solve the problem. The entry talks about the possibility of AOL and Yahoo to start charging senders for every email they are sending. The reason behind this is to limit spamming. However, is it really a remedy?

I agree with the writer who said that spam will not reduce. What will be reduced is the amount of spam blocking that the senders are experiencing. The only viable way to reduce spamming is to receive mails only from paying senders. And who the hell will block all the unpaid emails? Basically, no sane person will.

E-commerce web site services for sure will be greatly affected by this probable change. This can also be one of the disgusting drawbacks that AOL and Yahoo will be giving.

Flash vs. Ajax (Are they worthy of comparison?)

An entry entitled AJAX...62% Good? hit me today. It is an entry about introducing Ajax as the new ‘big thing right now’. Does that mean Flash is already a history when it comes to might? Or perhaps the latter has still its crowning glory and what is coming out now is only a misnomer, no less.

Part of the entry states:

At the time, FLASH (or at least 90% of the implementations I saw) did not make sense to me. I advertised myself as someone who made “subtle use of Flash”. To me that meant "practical" use of Flash.

AJAX is the big thing right now. AJAX is pretty cool. I really like that the BIG THING with AJAX is NOT the wow factor, it’s the improved usability - at least that’s the big thing in my books. That said, there will be lots of sites that get caught up in the WOW and lose sight of the usability.

We use AJAX on 2ndSite now and we will use it more. Our use is so “subtle” you may not even realize we use it. We use it to enhance performance (page loading).

Flash is 99% bad is a concept I heard about Friday. It stands for 99% bad implementations. I’m curious to see how people use AJAX and what the implementations turn out to be. There are a lot of browser compatibility issues with AJAX. The “Back” functionality is problematic.

I’m a glass is half full kind of guy. What do you think? Ajax is 62% good? I guess we’ll have to wait and see…

Ajax is a promising web site design and development services technology. Let’s see what’s going to happen in the near future.

Second Life in Web Services

E-commerce services saves. It saves not only the business but the lives revolving in it.

I have come across a blog entry entitled Making a Living in Second Life. In toto it says:

Jennifer Grinnell, Michigan furniture delivery dispatcher turned fashion designer in cyber space, never imagined that she could make a living in a video game.

Grinnell's shop, Mischief, is in Second Life, a virtual world whose users are responsible for creating all content. Grinnell's digital clothing and "skins" allow users to change the appearance of their avatars -- their online representations -- beyond their wildest Barbie dress-up dreams.

Within a month, Grinnell was making more in Second Life than in her real-world job as a dispatcher. And after three months she realized she could quit her day job altogether.

Now Second Life is her primary source of income, and Grinnell, whose avatar answers to the name Janie Marlowe, claims she earns more than four times her previous salary.

Amazing, isn’t it? it can give new life to a financially devastated person. He/she can stand tall after becoming a broke or discontented. E –commerce services may mean less pressure but more income. Great and refreshing new start for everyone!

Picture Perfect

Picture perfect image is pretty hard to achieve. It takes great passion and diligence on the part of the photographer as well as the one editing it.

I have come across a blog entry entitled “Morning-After Empties”. It said, “It’s pathetic, and criminal, how some New Year’s Eve revelers think a lake is one big trash bin. I saw several empty beer bottles floating all over the lake when I took my morning stroll in the park. These two were somehow blown together by the wind”.

In this blog, you can find several pictures that can capture your distinctive taste. What caught mine was the image where there are bottles floating over the lake. Quite a messy sight. Pretty sad how people manage to ruin the environment that they are living. Same environment that their descendants will be living in the future.

Nonetheless, it is nice to capture the beauty behind the trash. In fact, this shot can very well be a part a fabulous web design!

It pays to know what art is!

Web Development Wishes

WE have lots of wishes this year. And we categorize them, right?

When it comes to web development, what do you think are the rightful things that should occur? What’s your wish?

I have read a blog entry entitled Your Three Web Standards Wishes for 2006. It has enumerated the author’s wishes. Here it goes:

WEB STANDARDS WISHES can come true. At least in my little fantasy they do!

Put aside all thoughts of possible or impossible and dream up the three most desired improvements, changes, or new perspectives that you would like to see in the Web standards design and development arena.

I have so many it’s difficult to ask for three, but here goes:

  • CSS 2.1 formally becomes a recommendation
  • WCAG 2.0 gets sorted out
  • More companies, organizations, and agencies get into best practices

These three are important wishes for web development. If you are to make yours, what are they?

Cool Web Designs

It’s nice to know that artists can express themselves in different ways. Say, in web design. As we can see, there are lots of captivating and breath-taking designs that arrests are peculiar tastes.

I have read an article in the Net entitled Now our speakers are cool like 007. And it said:

We’ve been experimenting with different Flash banners on our home page — some built by us, some commissioned from in-house designs — but none of them were really accomplishing what we needed: to promote the speakers and sessions of Flashforward2006 Seattle while looking very cool.

“Who do we know who’s cool?” we asked ourselves. Right about then, Brendan Dawes, longtime friend of Flashforward, made the mistake of sending us a New Years greeting.

“Hey, Brendan is cool!” Email was sent. The result is now gracing our home page, and we think you’ll agree that it finally does what it should: look cool. Thanks, magneticNorth!

We asked Brendan to tell us a little bit about their inspiration and process for this project, and he sent the following. Read on to find out what all this has to do with James Bond…

Said article has also posted designs. Their web designs include series of dots. Using different principles of art, those dots appear vivacious and pleasing to the eyes.

There are countless of captivating designs in the Net these days, I hope they grow more.

Designmania

Different styles. Different idiosyncrasies. Artists are like that. Weird. Absurd. Out-of-this world! I’m glad there are lots of artist in this twisted world or else nobody would care to understand.

As I was poring over the latest website design in the designers who blog, I noticed this eccentricity and style of various artists. It feels good to see the soaring potentials of web development.

There was one entry there which is entitled Sparth Construct. The man behind it was Nicolas Bouvier. The rest of his works are found in sparth.com. This talented artist has already contributed several games since 1997. His works have gone a long way already. They have been used in the covers of French and English authors.

Another captivating design was for the web development. It was called Social Design Notes by John. With designs lie this, viewers will appreciate graphics more.

I am anticipating for a more hardcore art. Still searching….

Fuss-Free Web Promotions!

1. Take advantage of the search engines. Submit your site to search engines. There are those that offer services free of charge. You can submit to Google, Yahoo, Altavista, Infoseek, Lycos and other trusted search engines. You can submit with an interval of 3 to four months. Try a redirection, if you cannot submit the real URL.

2. Do some reciprocal linking. This is one of the best ways to lead viewers to your website design. In this method, you exchange link with other websites. That way no site is disadvantaged. To find sites, you can again use the search engines.

3. Exchange banners. This is also one of the most productive ways to promote your website. However, they do not bring much traffic.

4. Write articles and press releases. People wants to read news and tips more than reading ads. Moreover, a good number of articles and news releases with your website as footer is a promotional tool. Submit them to high-ranking sites in order to market your site.

5. Use meta tags. Always use the same on your site especially on the index page. Give your title, description and keywords to make it easier for the search engines to locate you.

6. Patronize online classifieds. Millions of online ads programs are available in the net. Choose a category where your site belongs and add your site. Resubmit every 2 months to update them.

7. Make signatures. Use signatures which are linked to your websites. You can use these signatures when posting a reply in forums, chat rooms and guest books.

8. Maximize webrings. This is also a productive way of promoting. All you have to do is to find and join webrings which are similar to the topics in your site.

9. Do some promos. Promotions like discounts can be a tempting strategy that can boost both your traffic as well as sales.

Promote your site and make it productive!

Trace Photoshop’s Beginning

Perhaps you may be wondering how Photoshop started? Together let us discover…

How Discovered?

John Knoll was then working at Industrial Light and Magic while Thomas Knoll was studying his Ph. D. on image processing at the University of Michigan. Both of them worked on a larger, more cohesive computer application which they called Display. They experimented further in order to give it more features like gamma correction, loading, saving different file formats and others. To cut the story short, Display became ImagePro in the year 1988. The sold it as a commercial application.

Transition comes

ImagePro was given a new name when they potential publisher suggested PhotoShop during the duo’s demo. Actually, it just stuck. Fortunately, PhotoShop became a big hit that most software companies switched to it. So far, only Adobe proved to be its competent contender. PhotoShop was then sold wholesale but only licensed and distributed. Royalties were still going to the Knolls.

Knoll brothers further incorporated other features to improve the software. Eventually, through the encouragement of John and Russell Brown PhotoShop became the biggest dynamo in image enhancement. It was finally launched in February in the year 1990.

Whens made digital

The release of PhotoShop in the E-commerce web development world is a great success. And that success continued. The development of version 2.0 made it more accepted and loved. The new version added new features such as Pen tool, Duotones, import and rasterisation of Illustrator files and support for CMYK color. Mark Hamburg also added Bézier paths to make it more interesting. The addition of layers is the most fabulous contribution of PhotoShop.

The present reign

Adobe continues to come up with new features for PhotoShop. In fact, the latter is now part of the Creative Suite 2. Still, PhotoShop is considered the leader in imagery. Its reign can be flagrantly acknowledge since its inception up to the present time. In addition, it has already reached its version 4. From this we can say that its competitors have still a lot to be learned from the dynamic and invincible imaging software!

Page Layout Secrets

When it comes to web development, one of the most difficult things to do is the lay out. So, what are these layout secrets?

Together let us unfold them one after another…

1. Centering it all is no good. The secret is doing the contrary and not centering everything. The latter will just make the page disorganized, strewn and drab. The alignment may also seem weak and wanting.

2. The use and mastery of contrast is indispensable. Contrast is one thing that makes the page attractive. The use and mastery of it in color, value, size and weight will greatly affect the site’s appearance and edge.

3. Apply deviations if necessary. Most of the designers practice nowadays is to develop a ‘uniform-pages’ look. They try to use same background colors and other peculiarities to establish similarities to the homepage or other pages. But the fact is that viewers can be easily bored with that scheme.

Placing lines in between contents also manifests division. Instead of using these lines, use blank ‘buffer zones’. This way what are created are invisible lines to make the effect subtle.

4. Do not forget that functionality is the king of web development. Moreover, keep the content and information full, tight and pretty useful. Use the space, don’t waste.
